Dearest friends and enemies ; ) of Cakewalk,
I thought I’d take a moment to write a love letter to all of our friends… The time has finally come to set the ovens and mixers free. We have decided to pack it in and close our doors.
Cakewalk was started way back in 2009 in a tiny kitchen in Bountiful, UT--Some of you remember it. I would bake a handful of Dillos and cupcakes all night long in tiny pans in a tiny oven with my newborn son in a backpack. Cupcakes turned into wedding and birthday cakes that spanned the entire 11 years, in some cases. Happy 11th kids of Cakewalk! For this I would like to say that I truly appreciate the honor of being part of so many people’s lives, celebrations and traditions. Meeting all of the friends and customers (both local and traveling) has been a blast!
It is an exciting, yet somewhat sad time for veganism. On the one hand, veganism is growing rapidly which is a wonderful thing for animal lives. Also the products and manufacturers of vegan food items abound so we can get almost everything we want in vegan form. On the other hand, major corporations have gotten involved which has left less room for smaller entities and DIY outfits to get in the game and get noticed. Small shops cannot keep up with the buying power of the large companies which leads to higher prices. This is why, in many cases, the “vegan tax” exists. Ultimately, this is one of the main reasons that we have decided to shut down. In order to grow any larger than just a small-time bakery, the next step would have been industrial packaging, mass production and distribution… and that just isn’t in the cards for this punk with a dream.
I have decided to move on to pursue other passions and find new ways to speak up for human and non-human animals. Check the facebook periodically, as I may have some final treats to sell… and potentially some DIY Dillo kits! I am also toying around with the idea of writing a cookbook.
If any of you are interested in taking over my business, I’d be open to the idea of discussing selling it to the right person because I do love how happy Dillos make people. It would probably be best to go to another already established vegan bakery or food establishment, however.
Nonetheless, I just wanted to let everyone know that I have endless gratitude and love for all of the friends who have believed in this company and worked long hours with me, all the vendors across the country who have helped distribute my products, the customers who have supported us and the non-vegans who sing our praises. And the biggest shoutout goes to every single one of you that thought “Dillo” actually said “Dildo”... because that honestly never got old!
